Identify, a recital concept developed by vocalist Aryssa Leigh Burrs, is a concert experience that creates a space in which collaborators and audience members alike will find comfort within, ask questions about, and feel safely challenged by their own identity. Through the lens of her own four “pillars” of identity, Aryssa has chosen sets of music, visual artwork, and experiential concepts to help begin a dialogue with others to feel supported within their own “pillars.”
I would have been remiss to have not created a set that honors just how important music making is to my home of Identity. You will hear the connections that Henry Purcell, Franz Schubert, and Richard Strauss make, relating the holy art of music to our deepest love, our calm through the storm, and even to the highest of angels above.
I have discovered bits of my core by interacting and growing within numerous types of partnerships. In this set, Debussy uses the text of Louÿs to depict the journey a relationship takes from its fiery birth, to its intense, all-consuming maturity, and into its frozen and brittle dying days.
Being a womxn in this world brings about such an innate and stunning bond with other humans possessing this pillar, as we fight to dismantle the many structures around us that are built specifically to put us down. I am proud to be sharing with you my interpretations of these iconic pop songs that have time and time again, gifted me with the love and power housed in womanhood.
